Scientists concerned for the Banana

Some troubling news as I sit here eating a banana. I once read that what we know as the common banana dates only from the 1920’s and is a hybrid called the “Cavendish”. It was developed to replace an earlier banana variety that was destroyed in a blight after the turn of the 20th century. Climate change is now being blamed for new problems threatening this staple crop that feeds tens of millions, and supports the economies of many nations in Central America and the Caribbean. Headlines may soon read “Yes, we have no bananas!”

This story was found in the electronic edition of The Independent (U.K.)

Scientists ‘incredibly concerned’ for fate of banana as plagues and fungus infections spread across world’s supplies – Americas – World – The Independent.
