India celebrates 65th Republic Day with large military parade in New Delhi

Congratulations to all Indians this week. Last Sunday, India celebrated it’s 65th Republic Day with many festivities including an elaborate military parade in New Delhi. While looking through the wonderful photo series in this article, I was struck by how “British” much of this military parade looks, almost something right out of the days of the Indian Empire. Click on the link below and enjoy the parade. Several frames in I swear that I see bagpipers wearing tartans.

UPDATE: I’ve had an Indian gentleman write in to inform me that at the time of independence, the British Indian Army was divided between India, Pakistan and Britain (Britain kept some Gurkha regiments) and India retained the British regimental system of organization. Many of the regiments marching in the parade have histories that predate independence. Military units generally respect their traditions, so there you have it.

There is a very nice photo series to be viewed in The Telegraph (UK):
